Maine is a state in the New England region of the United States. There are many theories about the origin of the name “Maine”. However, the most commonly accepted theory is that the state’s name comes from the French province of Maine. Maine covers approximately an area of 33,215 square miles with the coastline stretching up to 3,500 miles. There are 16 counties in the state of Maine.
The capital city of Maine is Augusta, located in Kennebec County, although Portland is the largest city. The other major cities in Maine are Laval, Mayenne, and Vendôme. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the south and east of Maine. The Bay of Fundy is also in eastern Maine. The Canadian province of New Brunswick is to the northeast and to the northwest is Quebec. In the New England region of the United States, Maine is the northernmost state and also the largest. This state borders New Hampshire to the west. Maine experiences a continental climate, especially in the southern parts of the state.
The state of Maine has about 6,000 lakes and ponds, with Moosehead Lake being the largest. With its coastal location, seafood is one of the most popular cuisines. Lobsters in particular are a specialty. In addition to the coastal topography, the state also has several eroded valleys and mountainous regions. Mountainous areas help raise livestock, resulting in several related industries, such as dairy and poultry. Agriculture is also practiced with blueberries, apples, and maple sugar that make up the product. In addition, there are industrial products such as paper, wood and wood products, electronic equipment, leather products, food processing, and textiles.
Maine is known for the spectacular ocean scenery and therefore tourism is also one of the thriving industries. There are several beaches along the coast with picturesque fishing villages. Maine also boasts a dense forest cover, made up mostly of pine trees. Hence, the state is popularly known as “The pine state.”
