Every year there are thousands of destination weddings in Jamaica. In fact, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board, during 2002, over 10,000 tourists got married in Jamaica! Yes, couples from all over the world come expecting… and finding… the most romantic place in the world to say “I do”. If you’re thinking about getting married on our beautiful island (and need information on the paperwork involved), read on for the 5 steps you need to take before getting married in Jamaica.

[1.] The first thing you should do is call the Ministry of Homeland Security and Justice about 4 weeks before you arrive in Jamaica. You will need to do this to process a marriage license. (The cost of a marriage license is 4 thousand Jamaican dollars, currently it is around US$60 – US$65). You can contact the Ministry at (876) 906-4923. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 5 pm and Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (all times are Eastern Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time is not observed).

[2.] Next, you will need to order all the documentation for your marriage license. Bring certified copies of your birth certificate which must include your father’s name. You will need proof of divorce if applicable and a certified copy of the deceased spouse’s death certificate if she is a widow or widower. If you are under 18, you will need the written consent of your parents.

[3.] Arrange with a certified marriage officer to perform the ceremony. There are non-denominational Marriage Officers who will marry you and your fiancé(e) at the location of your choice. Fees range from $50 to $250 USD. You will need 2 witnesses, but the marriage officer can usually provide you with witnesses.

[4.] You will need to arrive in Jamaica 24 hours before you plan to get married. Is the law. Take advantage of this time to get in touch with your Marriage Officer and arrange any last minute details.

[5.] On your special day, meet your Marriage Officer and make your Jamaican wedding legally binding.

There you go! Follow the 5 steps outlined in the checklist above and you too can be officially married in Jamaica.

Please note that Jamaica does not require a blood test to issue your marriage license. Also, some hotels have wedding coordinators who will do everything for you… except marry your future spouse! There are packages that include all expenses associated with the ceremony, and sometimes the wedding coordinator also acts as the wedding officer. Package prices will vary, so shop around first.
