Cliff Prince, a Bassmaster Elite Series angler from Palatka, Florida, joins us in this episode.

He’s fished the Elite Series for eight years, the Bassmaster Classic twice, and he enjoys hunting deer when he’s not fishing.

Cliff says his number one challenge when it comes to tournaments is the lack of confidence that can come from a failed practice session.

He talks about how little time he is allowed to prepare in a new body of water before the tournament, but he also talks about how the worst practices can sometimes lead to the best performances.

Then we hear more about how Cliff prepares a game plan and his belief that Mother Nature is the most important factor in what fishermen do.

Mike asks Cliff if he likes to take notes, and Cliff replies that he used to, but now prefers mental ones. Then he talks about the lakes being different each time he returns to one, even if it is during the same week.

Cliff says that, for this reason, he tries not to get sucked into the past.

Cliff recently learned a great lesson in Atlanta about the differences between warm and cold water fishing that he reveals to us.

He then shares his thoughts on what is the hardest part of fishing in the Elite Series and explains the endorsement commitments.

One thing that has helped Cliff succeed in the Elite Series is patience, which explains why being mentally prepared for tournaments is so important.

Afterward, we learn what Cliff’s top fishing secret is and his favorite bait.

Cliff quote

“Bass fishing is in my blood. It seems I’ve been fishing since my feet first hit the ground, starting with a gill bush branch, nylon line, and a 5/0 shark hook, fishing on the drainage ditches on my parents’ property My mother said she was always determined to land “the big one”, fishing every day from sunrise to sunset, then I would go to bed and dream of fishing almost every night.
