Sport is part of human and social development; it can contribute to social cohesion, tolerance and integration and is an effective channel for physical and socio-economic development. The rules of the game transcend differences and inequality and help redefine success and performance. Through sport, people identify new role models in society. Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world and one of the most watched. These are two teams of five active players, usually two guards, two forwards and a center, each trying to score points. It is played both indoors and outdoors.

The referee begins play by tossing the ball up (a jump ball) between the two opposing center players, who stand facing each other in the center circle of the arc of play. The player who wins the ball may pass, shoot, touch, roll or dribble the ball in any direction, subject to official rules. The object of the game is to shoot the ball through the opponent’s basket while preventing the other team from getting the ball and scoring goals. This game requires concentration, confidence and relaxation.

This game is played within the established rules and regulations. No foul can be committed, which is an act of infraction and if a referee calls a foul, the player can take a free kick without any defense from the opposing team. Shots can be made by shooting the ball from a distance in a high arc towards the rim, or by getting under the basket and jumping with the ball to spectacularly ‘dunk’ it into the rim. This is a timed game, played over 4 quarters or even 2 halves. It’s a teamwork game and usually requires you to be attentive and obviously active. You can play basketball with basic skills, but to be a great player, it takes more work and patience. You need to treat the loss as an opportunity to learn and improve. Be humble but never lose your competitive fire, just use it positively by making yourself better.

Coaching basketball is a rewarding task that you can make a career out of, or you just want to volunteer for the sake of leisure. You can gain or improve your basketball knowledge by reading books, watching basketball games, watching basketball videos, and asking previous mentors for advice. Your learning should include running drills, basketball fundamentals, specific offenses and defenses. Good coaches are genuine. They teach their players the importance of hard work. They never asked about their players. They are great human beings and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of the children they care for.

Setting goals is a practice that all great players are familiar with. Before each game you should write down what you plan to achieve. Depending on your position, you’ll want to measure things like points scored, assists, rebounds, turnovers, etc. Take notes of the game, your observations and impressions of the opponent and save them. Check these out the next time you play them. Then you can develop a game plan that will hopefully favor your strengths and attack your weaknesses, and negate your strengths.
