Powerball and Mega Millions
In the United States, there are several lotteries, but two of the most popular are the Powerball and the Mega Millions. Both lottery games have rollover cash prizes that can reach billions of dollars. Most recently, the Mega Millions jackpot topped $1 billion. To play Powerball, players choose six numbers (which are 1 through 69) and one of the Mega Ball numbers. Powerball tickets cost $2 each.
Powerball jackpot winners are based in the state in which they purchased their tickets. In the June 2 drawing in Ohio, a ticket purchased in Sunbury, Ohio, won a $261 million annuity. It was the first Powerball jackpot in the state of Ohio. Powerball is also sold in Montana, but before the cross-selling expansion, the state sold Mega Millions first, then Powerball.
Powerball is available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. It replaces the old lottery called Lotto*America. Powerball was introduced in April 1992 and was soon followed by the Mega Millions lottery a decade later. Among these states, only Alabama does not sell lottery tickets.

The jackpot was shared between three states: California, Florida, and Tennessee. The jackpot winner of the October 2018 drawing was Lerynne West. She won the jackpot with a ticket bought in New York.
