Street luge is an extreme sport that involves speeding down a large steep hill at over 60 mph on a small wheeled board. You’re just a couple inches off the pavement and trying to steer this oversized skateboard around the curves. The chances of hitting an object or a hole in the road and tipping over are quite high. Sounds like your cup of tea and you want to know more about how to get involved?

Step one

See some street luge events first hand. After this, you can decide that you are not as crazy as you thought and will start knitting instead. If this doesn’t put you off, try chatting with a few of the passengers to make sure they’re not all crazy or nearly paralyzed. Try to watch the X games.

Second step

Part of this sport is building your own street sled, you can find plans for this on the internet and some of the riders should be able to give you some tips and advice. You should research this carefully to get your sled going as fast as possible to get your adrenaline pumping.

Step three

Safety … is not a word commonly associated with street luge. Ideally, it could do with being wrapped in a mile of bubble wrap, but that wouldn’t be aerodynamic. So first of all, if you want to live, get yourself a decent motorcycle helmet with a face shield. You should also bring leathers, ideally an all-in-one motorcycle suit, if not, jacket and pants. Fill with whatever you can find, old skateboard pads, hockey pads, and motorcycle gear – the more the merrier. If you want to use your hands again, get some good gloves and you will need some very resistant boots since these are your brakes, if you pass them be prepared for them to tickle your feet …

Step oven

Now you are ready for your first run, start with a prayer and make sure your will is up to date. Take it easy as you learn to control the sled, see if you can get other riders to join you and help you with some tips.

Step five

Practice as much as your injuries allow and keep an eye out for announced events that you can compete in, when an event occurs, try to travel with other riders, make friends and exchange tips and techniques, you can collect ideas to improve your sled and equipment .

Step six

When you’ve entered and there are few events, you should have amassed a collection of other luge nuts as friends and you can continue to improve your knowledge of the sport and make your sled the fastest. In no time you’ll be helping new maniacs get in and enjoy the sled life …
