Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Bill Gates, Michael Phelps, Donald Trump. All of these names are synonymous with success, fame, incredible abilities and skills, and the insane amounts of money they make doing what they do. All of these personalities have something that they are well known for, something in which they are achieving great success. These 5 guys just decided one day as adults that they would be great or they were just born great, right? Of course, no!

Michael Jordan: You’ve been playing basketball since you were a kid in the driveway before you had a real hoop to play with. One year in high school, Jordan didn’t even make the cut for varsity basketball.

Tiger forests: Seen in videos on national television playing with toy golf clubs at the age of 3!

Bill gates: His parents had planned for him to go to law school. At age 13 he went to a preparatory school where he became interested in programming after his school purchased an ASR Teletype Model 33 terminal. His first program was a tic-tac-toe game that allowed the user to play against the computer.

Michael Phelps: He only started swimming at the age of 7 when his mother thought it would be a good outlet to release energy since he had ADHD. He was in his first Olympics at age 15.

Donald trump: His father was a real estate developer. Trump’s first part of a deal was when his father bought Swifton Village Apartments in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1962 for $ 5.7 million. Donald was able to take the lead in some of the smaller jobs like landscaping, etc. He was able to take more advantage and ended up drastically affecting apartment availability rates within two years.

If you haven’t figured out where I’m going with the details above, I’m about to reveal it to you. Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Bill Gates, Michael Phelps, and Donald Trump started at different times in their lives. They all do very different things, but none of them achieved the level they are today overnight. It’s called practice. Why do we expect athletes to practice to improve and stay on top? Why do many of us in business seem to fly down the seat of our pants? We should be practicing too!

Whether it’s putting up, shooting, swimming, creating new shows, or negotiating real estate deals, it all takes practice, and a lot! Think about where you would like to be in your real estate career in 5 years. Think about what it will take to get there. Think about your first deal, or if you haven’t closed a deal yet, think about your first interaction with a customer. Was it a perfect experience? Were you able to answer questions with confidence and precision? Was it a complete disaster? It has improved?

Whatever your results, there were probably a lot of things you could have done differently. In fact, even with 9 years of real estate experience in various areas of the business and tons of training, I often have to search for a book or search online. Sometimes I have to tell a client that I will contact them with an answer to their question. I recently started using some online resources much more effectively and am saving an incredible amount of time and effort. With practice, we gain confidence, increase our skills, work more diligently, negotiate better, reduce liability risks, earn more money, etc. Practice Makes … Business Success!

The next time you’re working on a deal and following your routine, think about what you could do to make part of your transaction easier. Then create a quick little plan to make that change. Then practice it! Bring your elbow in slightly, spread your fingers a bit more, line the ball up with the hoop, and shoot … as many times as necessary.

Stay motivated!
