Queenstown is the euphoria capital of the world, but I’d recommend these two fantastic ways to experience its beauty. Take the old Steamship, across Lake Wakatipu, to Walter Peak High Country Farm and take the Skyline Gondola to the observation deck overlooking Queenstown and the surrounding area.

It is a real pleasure to travel on the TSS Earnslaw Steamship. There is a sense of elegance to her and she is known as the “Lady of the Lake”. She has been ferrying passengers across the lake since 1912 and is one of the last coal-fired ships in the southern hemisphere. She can watch the engines start as she travels across the lake from an observation area. Don’t forget to go up to the outside deck and admire the magnificent scenery. There are great views all around you. Watch out for the paragliders coming down from the mountain peaks!

Across the lake, the steamboat stops at Walter Peak High Country Farm, where you can experience New Zealand farm life. Perhaps a guided horseback trek through the countryside or a tour of the farm around the Colonel’s house appeals to you? You can return on the TSS Earnslaw when you are done looking around the farm. Just enjoy a leisurely cruise on the water and maybe join in a sing-along with the resident pianist. Watch out later for the TSS Earnslaw sailing over the lake because it’s a magnificent sight to see!

The Skyline Gondola rises steeply from Queenstown. At the top is a truly world class view over the Remarkable Range and over Lake Wakapitu to Cecil and Walter Peaks. The scenery is simply stunning and definitely has a “wow” factor! It can get cold up there, so pack some warm clothes. There are some activities on the platform. Try the AJ Hackett Bungee Jump and the Luge for a thrill.

A great way to experience the Skyline platform is to book the Kiwi Haka Maori show, followed by a sumptuous dinner at the Skyline restaurant. Maori perform various indigenous skills, passed down from generation to generation, for you. The highlight is the intimidating and powerful performance of the “Haka” war song and dance.

Be sure to be at the front of the line for the Skyline Buffet Dinner. You are most likely to get the best seats in the restaurant with panoramic views of the mountains. It’s worth it. Queenstown is a “must see” on any trip to New Zealand. Be sure to experience its beauty at the Steamship and Gondola.
