How do you describe yourself? Are you conservative, bold, fun-loving, sophisticated, and even more so, how badly do you want to communicate this non-verbally?

You can do it with your choice of paint colors. It is a not so subtle communication about your personality and lifestyle.

You can of course use this both ways. Do you want to be more “undercover”? Do you want it to be a secret or a surprise? See how comfortable you are with colors and color combinations that go against your innate attractions and inclinations.

It’s a little different, of course, whether we’re talking about the outside of your home versus the inside.

Interiors are much more flexible, and it’s much easier to make them more expressive with interior colors, and then change them at will if you wish.

7 keys to color communication

1. Extroverts: They generally like to wear bright, contrasting colors and patterns that say, “Look at me.”

2. Introverts: They tend to be attracted to a more thoughtful color style. Soft blue, green and lavender hues in muted tones whisper “I love a quiet place.” These are good colors to create meditation spaces.

3. Style Conscious: Add some unique colors to the mix, looking at current trends in color and design.

4. Sophisticated: Subtle or dramatic. Color preferences are often neutral based, using metal and stone colors with accents of brightness or depth.

5. Happy and sunny: The effusive and optimistic personality is energetic and loves to share, in yellows and oranges they are combined with floral and garden colors. The message: “I want you to enjoy this too!”

6. Serious Guy: Look for earthy “neutrals” with stronger color accents in a monochrome-style palette. Some stronger splash of color shows the sense of adventure in this person.

7. Adventurous: An eclectic personality and source-drawn palettes ranging from natural and earth tones to “high-tech color” accents and international hues exemplify these individuals. There is a tendency to change color styles, accessories and paint the walls at any time.

Tips for Outward Expression

While exterior colors can also be expressive, it’s obviously a much bigger commitment when you paint the exterior of your home. You probably won’t be changing the color palette of your home’s exterior very often. But when you do, you can still take this into account, along with all other considerations, to create a custom home with exterior color.

Body Colors – Stand out beautifully with a deeper color than your neighbors wear.

Trim: Make it contrast with the body, but it doesn’t have to be white!

Accents – This is your place to be more expressive, with a bold complementary color.

Historic Buildings – Even color palettes for historic homes or other properties can include a bit of personal expression.
