Just when you have finished building your pond and think about putting beautiful aquatic plants to enhance its beauty or buying a house on the lake that you find with lilies and facing the water, you realize that extracting or removing them can be very difficult. These stunning looking plants, in addition to adding beauty to the pond or lake front, also create ruffles within the pond. Therefore, an overgrowth can lead to overgrowth and hence trimming and cutting or chemical treatment is necessary from time to time.

Before you make the final decision to remove them, you need to decide if you want to remove the entire batch or just trim or treat a few. Do you also know that these water lilies have a role in improving the ecosystem of the pond?

First of all, the plants release oxygen within the pond which is beneficial to the aquatic species and allows them to thrive freely. In addition, it is important that you maintain adequate movement in the water and that there is no stagnation in the pond. Water lilies help aerate the water for flora and fauna.

Now the question is when is the right time to start getting rid of water lilies.

Once you realize that around 30% of the base area is affected, it’s time to trim it down and if the covered area is around 50%, you should cut it off. These lily pads act as a filter for the pond water and help keep the pond clean and comfortable for other plants and animals. These also offer protection from sunlight, thus controlling algae growth and hiding places to ward off potential predators. If you prefer to kill the root system of water lilies, the best time is to apply Aquacide Pellets after they start to grow.

Now is the time to decide the extraction method-Manual Vs. Chemical Treatment

You will find many solutions and chemical treatments available in the market for the effective treatment of these water lilies. Aquacide pellets are a great systemic root killing product that is safe for wildlife.

Manual removal of these depends on how deep they are submerged in the water. Trimming them from the top will also be a temporary fix. You may also witness a growth spurt of fully developed lily pads within a couple of weeks.

In case of overgrown water lilies, the use of a chemical treatment is also recommended. Therefore, we suggest using Aquacide Pellets or Shore Klear with Cygnet. Shore Klear (glyphosate) and Aquacide Pellets (2,4-D) are environmentally friendly products and are used to treat different species of aquatic plants in ponds.

You can also try an effective method: simply mix glyphosate with cygnet and spray the mixture thoroughly on the lily pads or spread Aquacide granules around the growth. These methods are extremely operative and provide relief in about three weeks.
