A massively multiplayer massive online game

World of Warcraft is by far the most popular massively multiplayer online game ever made. Millions log in every day to search the gigantic world of Azeroth to slay dragons, other epic enemies, and possibly most importantly, each other. What makes these games so attractive?

For starters, it’s huge and it’s growing. With new expansions all the time and a huge world to boot, there’s a lot to explore on Azeroth. From beautiful forests to dark cemeteries and everything in between, there is a vast landscape with plenty of variety to venture into. Blizzard has a talent for creating worlds that are tailored to the fictional societies that inhabit them, and the world of Azeroth feels very much alive despite the cartoonish appearance.

However, all this would be nothing if it were not for the online game. There’s the fun of playing with friends and teaming up to accomplish epic feats of heroism, and the excitement of opponents daring to challenge your guild’s dominance. Human opponents tend to be much more exciting than robot-controlled computer players; For the Luddites reading this, would you rather play poker or cribbage against a computer or against real people you know? Therein lies the appeal of World of Warcraft.

There are plenty of other games online now, especially after World of Warcraft achieved huge commercial success, but Warcraft is still and probably will be the 10-ton gorilla on the market for some time to come. The sheer amount of detail combined with the population (are you going to be playing the game that all your friends are playing or just a couple are playing?) makes for a first class experience. You can visit the World of Warcraft website if you want to know more about the game and watch videos.
