This will never allow a hitter to maximize his skill. It will hit a lot of grooves. To correct this, while in contact with the ball, the bottom hand should be down and the top hand up.

For hitters using a wrist twist, to get the hands to function properly, using word pictures, we say that the bottom hand “lands the plane” and the top hand “hits the plane.”

Here’s the exercise: The bottom hand (lead hand) begins at the shoulder point, with the palm open and facing downward, while in the support position. The other hand is on the hip. The front heel is raised and the player charges. As the hips turn square to pitch, the hand on the shoulder moves directly to the front of the body, where the hands would be while the bat is in contact. The hand remains palm down. This is “Landing the plane”. Do this several times, starting with your hands back on the shoulder in the support position.

The upper hand (power hand) is next. Start in the same position but with your palm open and looking up and forward. As the hips rotate square to the tone, this hand will move to the same spot, but palm up. This is “crash the plane”. Do this several times.

Now do the exercise again. This time bring both hands together, but add the bat, starting at the shoulder area. Now move the bat in contact. The hands should be in the same position as before. Open them while in contact position. The upper hand should be open, palm up, under the bat. The lower hand should be open, palm down, on the bat.

Note: The proper action to complete the stroke is for the upper hand to continue under the bat through contact and the first extension. The bat will finally roll when it reaches the second extended position, just before the stroke is completed.

By repeating these baseball batting drills, with the images in mind, your hand action is enhanced. The batter does not swing to make contact. It’s snapping at the point of contact. This will increase the speed of the bat, the speed and the ability to make contact with the ball.
