Bowflex has earned a reputation as a leader in the home fitness industry. After seeing all those flashy infomercials, I was intrigued by the newest model: the Bowflex Revolution FT. I’ve been lifting weights since my college days and always worked out at a gym, I’ve never liked working out at home. However, my schedule has changed recently and with my local gym closing, I needed an option.

Bowflex offers a 6-week trial at their home gyms, which was enough to convince me to try one. One thing I don’t like is the fact that I can’t try one out in a showroom. The problem with ordering online is that I have to pay shipping if I don’t like it.

The Revolution arrived in several large boxes and took about an hour to put together. It is a heavy machine so I would recommend finding a permanent location in your home.

First impressions

I was pleased to find that the Revolution’s craftsmanship and construction are second to none. No wonder he weighs over 200 pounds. This latest model uses Spiraflex, a patented resistance technology that uses elastic straps. Wrapped around a coil, they provide constant weight resistance throughout the exercise movement. The feeling is comparable to free weights and cable machines. The main advantage of using a coil is greater control and efficiency of the exercise. It took me a little while to get used to it because the Revolution forces you to use good form, unlike free weights where you can change your stance and balance.

Versatility and exercises

The Bowflex Revolution FT offers almost 100 exercises and up to 400 variations. This includes independently moving arms, a multi-point foot harness, and a leg press plate. Plus, they give you an instructional DVD to guide you through the different exercises.

Offering so much versatility in a single machine is impressive, rather than the 3,500 square feet of my local gym.

Key benefits

o Features Spiraflex resistance technology

o 200 pound strength packs (can be stacked up to 280 pounds)

o Natural touch resistance provides a smooth, even touch.

o Independently movable arms allow you to work muscle groups from various angles

o Five position foot harness

o Quick and easy to go from one exercise to the next

o Each side works independently so two users can use Revolution at the same time

o The resistance will follow the user’s path of movement with its cable pulley system

o More than 100 exercises allow greater freedom to sculpt your body

So is it worth the money?

I think you should assess your needs before saying yes or no. What I can say from my experience is that the quality and versatility of the exercises make it one of the best machines in its price range. If you can spend $2,000 on a machine that will last for years and improve your health and physical appearance, then that would be a great match. Considering that an annual gym membership costs $700 a year, plus time waiting in line and driving, I think the Revolution pays for itself. Of course, you must commit to exercise. I like to put on my favorite CD when I train. If you really want to get fit and have time to work out, a Bowflex Revolution may be just what you’re looking for.
