Free Computer Disposal
Residents may dispose of obsolete home computers, monitors, keyboards, laptops & tablets, printers, televisions and fax machines for free at County events during the year. This collection program is funded by the Department of Solid Waste and is available for Madison County residents only. Please note that a driver’s license is required to drop off items. There is a limit of up to 10 computers or TVs per household. Typical electronics that are accepted include desktop computer equipment, televisions (all sizes), CRT and flat screen computer monitors, laptop computers, tablets, smartphones, cell phones, fax machines and printers. On-site and off-site hard drive destruction is also available for a fee. Electronics that are not accepted include refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, smoke detectors, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts, household batteries (including vehicle), chemical-laden equipment, aerosols and any equipment that contains mercury.
Many individuals are unaware that the cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and metals found in certain types of free computer disposal monitors and televisions cannot be placed in landfills or trash containers. It is against State law to place these devices in the garbage. Most municipalities have a household hazardous waste recycling program. If your town does not, there are a number of locations that recycle consumer electronics.
The New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act requires most manufacturers to provide free and convenient electronics recycling programs for consumers. To find out if a manufacturer is covered by the law, visit New York’s Recycling & Waste Reduction Information web page.
Free Computer Disposal 2024
Most municipalities have a household hazardous waste recycling programs that accept residential generated electronics, such as TVs, computer monitors and printers. To find out more, visit your municipality’s website or call the public works office. If you live in an apartment, check with your landlord or management company about household hazardous waste recycling programs. Some buildings require residents to schedule a bulk pick-up with the waste service provider.
DSNY holds SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables and Electronics) Disposal Events in the spring and fall. Residents are able to bring in chemicals, paints and electronics for free. Proof of NYC residency is required (NYS driver’s license or utility bill). Please be sure to read item labels and follow directions for items labeled DANGER, POISON or CAUTION.
